Ce livre est un grand traité d'esthétique, le plus important venu d'Italie depuis L'Esthétique comme science de l'expression et comme linguistique (1902) de Benedetto Croce. En rupture avec la pensée crocéenne de l’œuvre accomplie, Luigi Pareyson (1918-1991) s'interroge sur le processus de formation lui-même, la forme formante dans son rapport à la forme formée. La théorie de la formativité produit une philosophie de la création et une critique de type herméneutique qui inspirera de l'aveu même de son auteur L'Oeuvre ouverte d'Umberto Eco. Faisant grand cas du matériau lui-même, cette esthétique montre comment le mouvement de l'interprétation est indissociable de la production des œuvres. Inscrite dans la tradition morphologique inaugurée par Goethe et Dilthey, la pensée esthétique de Pareyson dépasse l'opposition entre historicisme et structuralisme et invente une approche originale de l'activité artistique.

Luigi Pareyson has so far been little known in the German-speaking world, although his works have been translated into many languages, as he is undoubtedly one of the founders of modern philosophical hermeneutics, along with Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur. Because of his intellectual diversity, he has inspired many of his students, who include Umberto Eco and Gianni Vattimo, and opened up to them a broad spectrum ranging from idealist approaches to hermeneutics and aesthetic theory. The volume provides a diverse but at the same time coherent sketch of important motifs of his philosophy: the main features of his interpretation of Fichte and Schelling, the foundations of his "ontology of freedom," his philosophical hermeneutics of religious experience, the basic lines of his aesthetics, and finally considerations concerning the social function that philosophy would have. Like a common thread, an intellectual attitude of wonder runs through all these contributions. It is the attitude of not fully comprehending human existence and its freedom, the evil in history, the phenomenon of exuberant beauty, the interpretive power of myth, the inevitable otherness of the other and of the self itself. And it is precisely this astonishment that has led people - from the beginning until today - to philosophize. Luigi Pareyson ist bislang im deutschsprachigen Raum wenig bekannt, obwohl seine Werke in viele Sprachen übersetzt wurden, da er zwei-fellos neben Hans-Georg Gadamer und Paul Ricoeur zu den Begrün-dern der modernen philosophischen Hermeneutik gehört. Aufgrund seiner intellektuellen Vielfältigkeit hat er viele seiner Schüler, zu denen Umberto Eco und Gianni Vattimo gehören, inspiriert und ihnen ein breites Spektrum eröffnet, das von idealistischen Ansätzen über die Hermeneutik bis zur ästhetischen Theorie reicht.Der Band liefert eine vielfältige, zugleich aber in sich kohärente Skizze wichtiger Motive seiner Philosophie: die Hauptzüge seiner Fichte- und Schelling-Interpretation, die Grundlagen seiner ,,Ontologie der Frei-heit“, seine philosophische Hermeneutik der religiösen Erfahrung, die Grundlinien seiner Ästhetik und schließlich Überlegungen, die die soziale Funktion betreffen, die der Philosophie zukäme. Wie ein roter Faden zieht sich durch alle diese Beiträge eine intellektuelle Haltung des Staunens. Es ist die Haltung eines Nicht-völlständig-Begreifens angesichts des menschlichen Daseins und seiner Freiheit, des Bösen in der Geschichte, des Phänomens der überschwänglichen Schönheit, der Deutungskraft des Mythos, der unvermeidbaren Andersheit des Ande-ren und des Ichs selbst. Und es ist genau dieses Staunen, das die Men-schen – seit den Anfängen bis heute – zum Philosophieren veranlasst.
